Highly Successful Shapwick Green Fair

It was a great sight to see this event so well supported by 30 businesses and organisations offering a wide range of ideas, advice and potential solutions to implement ways towards reducing our carbon footprint and its impact on global warming.  Their presence at the Fair was well rewarded with up to 600 people attending from all over Somerset and beyond.

Everyone was fully engaged throughout the event which made it so worthwhile for all concerned.  Many of the businesses and organisations stated it was one of the best events of its kind; some even said it was the very best!   This was praise indeed for all who had worked to stage the event and underpinned the value of so much effort.    It was very clear that virtually all members of the public went away with some useful advice which they can now begin to implement in their everyday lives and in some cases simply make adjustments.

A huge thank you is due to Edington and Shapwick School for hosting the event.  The efforts of both School Children and Staff on the days itself and leading up to the Fair were immense; the village is most grateful.  In addition to excellent facilities, refreshments for delegates (ably overseen by ladies from the Shapwick WI) the School played a central part in assisting with administration, publicity and marketing.  Meanwhile those setting up stands were so appreciative of the students who met them and helped carry their resources to the Sports Hall; they were a credit both to themselves and the School.  The Towards A Sustainable Shapwick (TASS) Group and all attendees were extremely grateful for all the help, support and hospitality provided.

During the course of the Fair several members of the public said that they would like to be involved in future activities of TASS.  This is most welcome and if there are more who would like to join in please get in touch with Mike Beale on 01458 210524 or mbshapwick@aol.com.  We hope to embark on a range of activities which are of interest to many and will lead to some fun, exchange of ideas, and a reduction in the carbon foot print.  A number of people signed up to register their interest in renewable energy.  As a start we intend to bring people together in the very near future that want to know more, to meet with experts and professionals and take this development forward.  It is hoped that with a group of people wanting similar things we can negotiate favourable financial terms.  If you haven’t registered your interest and would like to do so please get in touch.

Can we make this a Polden Hills community focussed network?  We hope so and we welcome more people becoming involved.  Please remember that this is not just for adults as we are all involved in the final outcome.

A lot of people doing just a little bit adds up to a lot being accomplished.  Let’s give it a go!

Towards a Sustainable Shapwick (for now) but Towards a Sustainable Polden Hills (in the future)?
